Depleted MCE boys track team shares WMD title

ONEKAMA — “The kids I had left on the team worked hard,” said Mason County Eastern boys track and field coach Ben Knizacky after his Cardinals finished second in the Western Michigan D League championship meet Wednesday.
According to Knizacky, his team has been whittled down by academic ineligibility. But by virtue of winning two of the three league jamborees, the Cardinals share the league title this season with the Onekama Portagers, who won the final meet.
“Being co-champs is good,” said Knizacky. “But we would have liked to win the title outright.”
The Cardinals won two individual events. Senior Rellis Cormany won the 400-meter dash (54.6 seconds). Senior Kelly Lemire tied for first place in the shot put (43 feet, 2 inches).
Eastern won two relay events. In the 3,200 relay, the Cardinal foursome of Cory Jolly, Stephen Knizacky, Nate Martin and Chris Segelstrom were first in a time of 9:20. Then in the 800 relay, Jolly, Cormany, Bryan Jolly and Ryan Rybicki teammed up to take that event in 1:37.
