Eastern sweeps Walkerville in softball; near WMD title
WALKERVILLE- Junior Kara Bryan threw a no-hitter and her senior teammate Melanie Stickney tossed a two-hitter as Mason County Eastern blanked Walkerville in both ends of a Western Michigan D League softball doubleheader on Monday. The scores were 14-0 and 15-0.
In game one, Bryan faced only 13 batters in the four-inning contest, one over the minimum. She struck out eight and walked one batter. The walk came with two out in the third.
Offensively for the Cardinals, Nikki Kolean, Heather Salmon, and Kerri Keilman had two hits and a double apiece. Stephanie Eichmeier and Courtney Harris also had two hits each and Jessica Budzynski scored three runs.
In the nightcap, which lasted only three innings, Stickney faced 13 batters, striking out six and walking two.
Budzynski had three hits for the Cardinals and Kolean had two hits, one a three-run homer and the other a two-run double. Also, Eichmeier had two hits and Salmon and Harris cracked doubles.
Eastern is now 16-4 overall and 9-1 in the league. A sweep of Onekama on Monday, May 12, at home would give the Cardinals their 12th consecutive conference championship.
