Freshmen step up for Pentwater in 2-0 soccer victory

PENTWATER — With several upperclassmen out with injuries, Pentwater High soccer coach turned to his freshmen and they responded, accounting for both goals in Friday afternoon’s 2-0 victory over visiting Mason County Eastern.
Both goals came in the second half.
“It was a good, physical, close game,” said Pentwater coach Andy VanZoeren, whose team outshot the Cardinals by a 26-12 margin.
Sara Little scored the first goal at the 17-minute mark. Courtney Copus assisted.
The second tally was by Andrea Burdick with six minutes remaining and Little assisted.
Little was in goal for the Falcons in the first half and was credited with five saves. In the second half, Megan Silvers, another freshman, moved into goal and made three stops.
“We had a good effort tonight from our freshmen,” said VanZoeren. “I have a couple of the upperclassmen out injured.
“They really picked it up and played well and we did a pretty good job, especially in the second half, of controlling the ball and controlling the game.”
