Eastern track teams qualify seven for state meet

HOLTON—The Mason County Eastern girls track and field team finished third at the Division IV regional meet at Holton High School on Friday evening.

North Muskegon won the regional title with 179 points followed by Saugatuck with 119.5, Eastern 100, Hesperia 85 and Ravenna 75.5 in the 14-team field.

“North Muskegon and Saugatuck just had too many bodies,” said Cardinal coach Matt Millspaugh. “I had just nine girls tonight.”

Eastern qualified for state in seven events. Sophomore Megan Wheeler won both the 100-meter high hurdles (16.8 seconds) and the 300-meter low hurdles (51.2). Junior Michelle O’Neal won the shot put (34 feet, 11 inches) and took second in the discus (93-9).

Senior Erica Knizacky placed second in the 1,600 (5:42.6) and third in the 3,200 (12:35.2).

Also qualifying for the state meet was the Cardinals’ 1,600 relay team of Jen Spinner, Kada Knizacky, Wheeler and Chelsea Orcutt which was second in 4:27.9.

POLE VAULT: 3-Jen Spinner, 8-0 (new school record); 4-Jackie Erickson, 7-6.

LONG JUMP: 5-Spinner, 14-11.5; 8-Jessica Bruesch, 13-10.

SHOT PUT: 1-O’Neal, 34-11; 6-Chelsea Orcutt, 27-6.

3200 RELAY: 5-MCE (Erickson, Courtney Englebrecht, Orcutt, Erica Knizacky), 13:05.1.

100 HURDLES: 1-Megan Wheeler, 16.8.

800 RELAY: 3-MCE (Spinner, Wheeler, Kada Knizacky, Bruesch), 1:56.9.

1600: 2-E. Knizacky, 5:42.6.

400 RELAY: 6-MCE (Englebrecht, O’Neal, Erickson, Bruesch), 1:02.2.
