LHS girls dominate quadrangular at Oriole Field
Winning eight of the 17 events, the Ludington Orioles girls track and field team opened its season Friday with a victory in a quadrangular meet involving Mason County Central, Mason County Eastern and Manistee High School.
The Orioles scored 109 points for first place. MCC followed with 79, then MCE with 35, and Manistee 33.
"It was tough night, weatherwise, rainy and cool," said Ludington's veteran coach Ross Donley. "We've had minimal time on the track, so we were pleased with most of the times."
"Like we will have to do all season, we came out of the field events strong," added Donley.
Ludington won four of the five field events. Senior Chelsea Anthony led the way by winning the discus (118 feet, 4 inches) and the shot put (34-7 3/4).
Oriole sophomore Emily Holbrook also won two individuals events. She won the pole vault (7-0) and 100- meter high hurdles (18.39 seconds).
Ludington topped the field in both sprint relays. The Orioles' foursome of Chelsea Henderson, Stephanie Sanders, Alex King, and Kelsie Russell won the 800 relay in 1 minute, 57.63 seconds. Then, Sanders and King teamed with Courtney Harrington and Kanesha Wilson to take first in the 400 relay in 59.2.
Ludington's two other firsts came from Henderson in the 200 (27.06) and King in the high jump (5-0).
Mason County Central was first in the two distance relays. The Spartans' team of Kristi Johnson, Carli Geers, Liz Deller and Alex Johnson ran the 3.200 relay in 11:36.24 for first place. In the 1,600 relay, Centrals Marla Nelson, Geers, Deller and Juliana Jackoviak crossed the finsh line first in a time of 4:47.63.
The Spartans also won three individual events; Kristi Johnson in the 3,200 (14:24.28); Geers in the 800 (2:55.41); and freshman Tiffany Egeler in the 300 low hurdles (54.6)
"That was the first time Tiffany ran over a hurdle this spring," said Central coach Ben Nelson. "We had nine new girls score their first varsity points tonight. We were very pleased with the girls' times and distances for the first meet."
Mason County Eastern's sole first place finish was came from senior Erica Knizacky, who won the 1,600 in 6:23.41.
