Orioles win four-team meet
LHS finishes first in nine events, piles up 123 points
The heavy rains came before Ludington hosted its four-team track and field invitational at Oriole Field.
On a cool afternoon at Oriole Field, the Orioles grabbed nine firsts, including two in the relays, and piled up 123 points. Mason County Central was second with five firsts and 58 points followed by Manistee which had three firsts and 55 points and Mason County Eastern with 20 points.
"Now I have a lot better feel for where we can move some of our kids," said LHS coach Scott Stone. "I'm really happy with the meet, happy that nobody got hurt and that we ran some good times and got a meet in."
Ludington's individual firsts were by Nick Johnson in the discus (116 feet, 10 inches), Zach Page in the shot put (44-4), Joe Burton in the pole vault (10-6), Travis Bailey in the 110-meter hurdles (16.42 seconds), Eric Reum in the 100 (11.53), Kevin Leikert in the 300 intermediate hurtles (45.18) and Ethan Fulton on the 200 (24.44).
The Orioles also won the 800 and 1,600 relays. In the 800, Gabe Rivera, Reum, Luke Pomeroy and Fulton went 1:34.17 and in the 1,600, Reum, Leikert, Pomeroy and Rivera won 3:39.82.
Stone was particularly pleased with the 1-2 finish of Reum and Fulton in the 100 and the tome posted by his 800 relay team.
"We went one-two with two guys that normally run the half-mile," said Stone.
"Our 800 relay went 1:34.17. It took us a while to get down that low last year."
Mason County Central individual victories were by Rob Locke in 400 (51.9), Wes Squires in the 1,600 (4:54.53), Dan Deller in the 800 (2:15.88) and Hared Lauber in the 3,200 (10:41.31). The Spartans also won the 3,200 relay where Squires, Deller, Lauber and Locke combined for a time of 8:41.75.
Manistee's individual victories were by Ryan Helminiak in the high jump (6-0), Kyle Kline in the long jump (19-7).
The quartet of John Phillips, Helminiak, Ethan Caoppola and Dalton Zawacki won the 400 relay in 47.5.
Normally 53 wins on a day like this," said Stone. "Rob's time says a lot for him."
Mason County Eastern's best finishes of the day were seconds by Jordan Ely in the pole vault and Rellis Cormany in the 200.
